A River Hawks through It

about

The Susquehanna River Hawks, previously Crusaders, are the athletics teams of Susquehanna University, a four-year, co-educational, private liberal arts university in Selinsgrove, in central Pennsylvania. The University is situated in the Susquehanna Valley approximately 50 miles (80 km) north of Pennsylvania’s state capital, Harrisburg. Susquehanna competes in 23 varsity sports in Division III of the NCAA. Most sports compete as part of the Landmark Conference with other Northeastern colleges.”

Featuring Susquehanna's school colors of orange and maroon, the logo features a sleek representation of a river hawk, with emphasis given to its distinctive and piercing eyes. "River Hawks, or osprey, are distinctive, powerful, adaptive and resilient," Susquehanna President L. Jay Lemons said of the bird found along the Susquehanna River. [… [We] evealed the new Susquehanna "S," which replaces the previous block "S" with smoother lines and the wings of the river hawk represented.

opinion/notes

The old logo(s) were typical college marks with a blocky "S" and some strokes and bevels. The name Crusaders was apparently an issue, considered by some as being aggressive and not pleasant because no one wants a crusade on them. So River Hawks it is because the university is close to a river and there are hawks. The new logo is typical sports nouveau but very nicely done, in particular the Susquehanna lettering that has a lovely rhythm in its condensed structure and as it arches over the curve. The "Q" is super hot. The "RIVER HAWKS" type is also very nice; it's simple, blocky, and has just the right proportions. The River Hawk icon is where the logo is another angry sports logo. It's nicely done and as simple as possible — bonus points for including a river in the swooshes — but it blends in with the crowd; which is not the worst thing that can happen and, after all, this is a university sports logo so it's no surprise it looks like university sports logo. The one thing I don't like at all is the "S" monogram. It's very unbalanced and it looks too much like an "S" with pokey things sticking out of it as opposed to being a cohesive unit of some sort. The uniforms are pretty straightforward and look okay. Overall, this exceeds the standards of a Division III athletics team and wins on typographic achievements.
