The old logo, holy cow, talk about useless. I'm guessing they are single quotations marks — which is what the British use when quoting something (as opposed to American English where the norm is double quotation marks) — because otherwise they are the worst depiction of tadpoles in a whirlpool I've ever seen. The wordmark was also pretty bad, set extremely tight without any visual adjustment particularly in the "ory" part and the "The" was so small it could have passed for misplaced ™ symbol. The new logo makes it crystal clear what the Book Depository is about: Books. There is no visual play, no allegories, no reference to "depository"… just a book. End of story. There is nothing inherently wrong with it other than being literally literal within a literal context. The wordmark is a major improvement and looks nice in the stacked lock-up. Sadly, it doesn't cupcake well or, at least, the cupcake vendor was not the best selection for such a high-stakes application.
