LogoArchive #1 by BP&O

LogoArchive #1 – Logo design zine published by BP&O and designed by Richard Baird

This first edition of LogoArchive in print was conceived, designed and sent to the printers within a day. It was inspired by a panel discussion that took place the day before at Somerset House as part of the exhibition Print! Tearing It Up. Today’s zine format and the revival of the independent publishing spirit of the past is a provocation. It is an opportunity to further the practice of research, archival and dissemination beyond the book. A chance to investigate the potential of both individual object and its context within ongoing project. This first edition is a compact 10 pages printed on Colorplan Ebony 175gsm with eight white passes and finished with black staples, it is a small first step but with ambitions to grow into a compelling and accessible series with each new zine marking its role within a continuum by the addition of an extra sheet (4pp). It is the first printed piece to fall under the BP&O publishing arm and hope our readers will get behind this.

The layout of LogoArchive plays with two expressions in dialogue with one another. The first is the storybook; a response to the often blunt and convivial metaphors employed by mid-century logo designers. The second is archival; an articulation of the practice of recovery and documentation. These serve to not only divide content but bring to light the two components of LogoArchive; an appreciation of individual form language and their collative value.

Each cover, in its graphic immediacy, will call out a theme, rather than using titles. This first edition features animals and will be followed up with eyes, globes and arrows. LogoArchive also intends to run special collaborative editions, distinguished, perhaps, by a different coloured paper stock and a guest curator.

LogoArchive as an Instagram project offers a historical counterpoint to BP&O. It is also an opportunity to connect more tangibly with readers. These will be available at events around London, the first of which will be TypeThursday July 5th. From Magma Books in their Covent Garden, Clarkenwell and Manchester stores, and from Counter Print. Use the button below to order directly from BP&O. If you would like a studio visit, a chance to hear a bit more about the project and a chance to buy copies, please  send an email.
